Powering the future of journalism
At PressPatron, we're passionate about improving the sustainability of high-quality journalism.
The company was founded by Alex Clark, after conducting his market research for a Master of Advanced Technology Enterprise. His comparative analysis of a range of business models showed that publications can generate high levels of revenue from donations and memberships, without a paywall.
As a former journalist, editor, photographer and media researcher, Alex has first-hand experience navigating the financial challenges faced by the media community and cares deeply about providing a solution that is cost-effective and easy-to-use. So far, PressPatron has generated $8.8 million (USD) on behalf more than 150 clients.
PressPatron works with publications at all scales, ranging from individual journalists and bloggers through to large publishers with dozens of newspapers, hundreds of journalists and millions of readers. This includes New Zealand's largest news website, Stuff.co.nz. PressPatron is also proud to be the fundraising technology partner for LINA, Australia’s largest not-for-profit industry association supporting local and independent digital news.
PressPatron has raised investment from a community of impact-driven investors who care about the future of journalism. This investment has been led by Bernard Hickey, one of New Zealand’s leading financial journalists. Bernard has over 25 years of experience working across a range of leadership roles at organisations including Reuters, the Financial Times, Newsroom Pro, Interest.co.nz & Stuff Limited. Bernard has also started several independent publications, including Hive News and The Kaka.
